#55 closed enhancement (wontfix)

Support XML

Reported by: cito Owned by:
Priority: minor Milestone: 5.0
Component: Classic and DB API Version: 4.1

Description

PostgreSQL supports XML and Python also has XML support in its standard library.

PyGreSQL should provide some support for this as well, even though supporting JSON seems to be even more interesting and important.

Unlike JSON, there is no obvious way to convert XML to native Python objects. There is also no distinguished XML representation in Python. xml.etree.ElementTree could be used, but it contrary to the Postgres XML type cannot store fragments. Also it's not clear whether the user really wants to load the XML with ElementTree or prefers to parse it with SAX or not parse it at all.

It's probably better to just return text and let the user decide what to do with it, so I am closing this ticket.
